Exactly what you need to update your OCI onto a new passport from the UK under the 2026 rules — including when the free online update applies.
When you renew your passport, your OCI card stays valid — but the new passport details must be linked. This checklist covers the documents the OCI portal asks for, and explains when the update is free online versus when a physical re-issue is required.

This is a general guide — requirements vary depending on whether you qualify for the free online update or a physical re-issue. We send a tailored checklist for your exact case within one working day.
Under the current rules your OCI remains valid for life even when your passport changes. In most cases you only need the free online ‘Update of OCI on new passport’ miscellaneous service, completed within 90 days of the new passport being issued.
A physical re-issue of the OCI card is only required for the first new passport obtained after age 20 (and historically after turning 50). For every other renewal, the online update is all that is needed — there is no fee and your existing card stays in your hands.

The online OCI miscellaneous update is free when done within 90 days of your new passport being issued. After 90 days the standard fee applies. A physical re-issue (new printed OCI card) is only mandatory for the first new passport you obtain after turning 20 — most other renewals only need the free online update.
For an online update you keep your existing OCI card — you simply upload a clear copy of it along with your new passport. A physical re-issue (only required for the first passport after age 20) does require you to submit the booklet/card to VFS. We confirm which route applies to your case.
A recent colour photo to the OCI specification: a square JPEG on a plain light background, taken within the last 30 days, with the face filling about 80% of the frame and the file under 200 KB. A separate signature scan on plain white paper is also required.
