An OCI miscellaneous update is what you file when a personal detail recorded on your OCI has to change — a legal name change, a change of nationality, a correction to your date of birth or parents' details, a change in facial appearance, or a card that has been lost, stolen, or damaged. NriDirect identifies which category your case actually falls under, prepares the application on the official Government of India OCI system, formats your photo and signature to specification, and arranges your VFS appointment where one is required. The rules changed on 7 July 2026 — check which service you actually need
OCI changed more in 2026 than in any year since the scheme launched, and most guidance online still describes the old system. What is true now:
- Physical OCI cards are no longer issued. The scheme has moved to e-OCI. Your existing booklet stays valid and is still accepted at immigration — but no update, in any category, produces a new printed card.
- Turning 20 no longer triggers anything. The one-time re-issue that used to be compulsory on your first passport after turning 20 was abolished. If you have been told you owe one, you don't.
- There is no re-issue at 50 either. That requirement went in 2021. Renewed your passport at 51? That is a free online passport update, not this service.
- Lost, stolen, and damaged cards no longer have their own category. They are now handled here, under Miscellaneous Services.
- Name, nationality, and appearance changes are now chargeable government services, filed at a VFS appointment rather than online.
A straightforward passport change is not a details update. If your name and personal details are unchanged and all that's happened is a passport renewal, you want OCI Link with a new passport — a cheaper service, free on the government side, and done entirely online inside the 90-day window. Past that window it is still OCI Link, just filed at a VFS appointment we book, with a government charge payable there.
Just acquired British citizenship and have no OCI yet? You need to surrender the Indian passport first, then apply for a Fresh OCI — neither of those is this service.

Your e-OCI card is included — no extra order, no extra fee
India launched the e-OCI card on 30 June 2026, and from 7 July 2026 it replaced the printed booklet entirely for new issuance. It is a secure digital OCI, integrated with immigration systems at Indian ports of entry. We generate and deliver yours as part of this service once your update is processed, at no additional charge. Your existing physical booklet remains valid alongside it.
When you need an OCI Miscellaneous Update
This is the right service if you are:
- Changing your name after marriage, deed poll, or a court order
- Changing nationality, or correcting the nationality recorded on your OCI
- Correcting an error — date of birth, place of birth, parents' details, or a misspelling carried over from your original application
- Recording a change in facial appearance
- Replacing an OCI that has been lost, stolen, or damaged — now handled here rather than as its own category
- Removing an ex-spouse's name from your record
A change of address, occupation, or email does not need this service. Those stay a free online update — send us a message and we will point you to the right form rather than sell you something.
How it works
Our process
- Tell us what's changing — a short WhatsApp with your current OCI, current passport, and the reason for the update. We confirm the correct category before you pay.
- Get a checklist built for your case — tailored to your specific update, usually back to you within one working day.
- Send scans — clear scans or good photos by WhatsApp or email. We check every document against current specifications.
- We prepare and file — we complete the application on the official Government of India OCI system and format your photo and signature to specification, usually within 24 to 48 hours of receiving your documents.
- Attend VFS where required — name, nationality, appearance, and correction cases are filed at a VFS appointment. We prepare the file and book the slot; you attend with your originals.
- Updated record and e-OCI — once processed, your OCI record reflects the new details and your e-OCI is generated and delivered.
Documents you'll need
- Your existing OCI card, both sides
- Your current, valid passport
- Evidence of the change — deed poll, marriage certificate, or court order for a name change; a police report where a card was lost or stolen
- A recent photograph to the Indian OCI specification: 2x2 inches (51x51mm), plain light background — not the UK passport specification, and not a white background

What your fee includes

Government and VFS charges sit separately from our fee. Several of those figures changed on 7 July 2026, so rather than quote a number that may already be stale, we confirm the exact current charge for your specific category before you order — no surprises at the appointment.
Mistakes we prevent
- Paying for a full details update when the case only needs the cheaper, free-on-the-government-side OCI Link
- Believing a re-issue is owed at 20 or at 50 — neither requirement exists any more
- Submitting a deed poll without the correct signature and witnessing
- Sending unofficial translations of a foreign-language marriage certificate
- Supplying UK-specification passport photos instead of the Indian 2x2 inch format, or a white background where a light one is required
- Expecting a new printed card that will never arrive, because physical cards are no longer issued
Timelines

Frequently Asked Questions
When does my OCI card actually need renewing?
A card first issued before age 20 has to be re-issued once you turn 20, and every OCI holder must be re-issued again at 50, so the photograph stays current. Any change to your personal details also triggers an update, whatever your age.
Can I put my new married name on my OCI card?
Yes. You will need legal proof of the change, which usually means a deed poll, a marriage certificate, or a court order. We confirm exactly which document your case calls for before you submit.
I have both a new name and a new passport — is that two separate applications?
No. A single miscellaneous-services application handles the name change and the passport transfer together, so you only pay and submit once.
What happens if I don't renew the OCI photograph on time?
There is no formal fine for a late re-issue. The practical risk is at the border: Indian immigration can query an OCI whose photo no longer matches you, which is why the age-20 and age-50 refresh matters.
Do I need an OCI update just because I've moved house?
Not on its own. Your residential address is never printed on the OCI card, so a house move by itself needs nothing. You would only update if the move coincides with a name change or a new passport.
How much are the government fees, and are they included in your price?
The From £100 NriDirect fee covers our preparation and handling, and is separate from the official consular and VFS charges you pay on your appointment day. A replacement for a lost OCI carries a higher embassy fee of £75, against the standard £21 for other updates.
How long until the updated card arrives?
Plan on roughly 25 to 40 days from your VFS appointment to the new card being issued. Securing the VFS slot itself can add days or weeks depending on availability.
