Why is a Surrender Certificate necessary at all?
Under Indian law you cannot keep an Indian passport once you become a citizen of another country. The certificate is the official proof that you have given it up, and it is asked for when you apply for OCI as well as by Indian banks, lawyers, and property registrars. We confirm the current requirements before you order.
Can I skip this and go straight to an OCI card?
No. The OCI portal will not accept an application without a Surrender Certificate number, so the surrender has to come first. If you want both sorted in one go, we can run them back to back through our bundled Surrender + OCI route.
Do I get my old Indian passport returned to me?
No. The Indian High Commission keeps and cancels the original document, so it will not come back to you. Take clear colour copies of every page before you hand it over, because you may need those details later.
I became British many years ago. Have I missed the window?
There is no deadline for surrendering, so a long gap since naturalisation is not a problem. We deal with late surrenders all the time, including cases where the High Commission asks for a short letter explaining the delay.
My Indian passport was lost. Can I still surrender it?
Yes. In that situation you will need a UK police report and a sworn affidavit instead of the physical document. We prepare the affidavit wording and talk you through obtaining the police report.
What does the government or VFS charge on top of your fee?
The VFS surrender fee of around £45 is paid directly at your appointment and is separate from our From £80 service fee. We tell you the exact amount to expect before your visit so there are no surprises on the day.
I kept using my Indian passport after becoming British. Does that cause a problem?
It can trigger what is often called a penalty surrender, where the Mission expects an explanation for the continued use. We draft the accompanying letter and manage that correspondence for you, so it does not stall your application.
