Fresh OCI Card Application

A Fresh OCI card is your very first Overseas Citizen of India card: a lifelong, multiple-entry document that lets people of Indian origin live, work, study and own property in India, with no visa ever needed. If you have taken British citizenship, or you grew up in the UK and never held an Indian passport, this is usually the most valuable Indian document you can hold. Who this is for#

Apply for a first-time OCI card if you:

• Held Indian citizenship on or after 26 January 1950 and have since become a British citizen
• Were entitled to Indian citizenship on that date
• Are the child or grandchild of a person who was an Indian citizen
• Were born in the UK to Indian-citizen parents and have never carried an Indian passport
• Are the foreign spouse of an Indian citizen or an OCI holder (see OCI Through Spouse)

One exclusion applies: citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh are not eligible.

5. You attend VFS — hand over your originals, give biometrics, and pay the government fees on the day.
6. The card is issued — usually 25 to 35 days after your visit, with status tracking and updates from us throughout.

Documents you'll need#

Have these ready:

• Current British passport with at least six months of validity left
• Your previous Indian passport (or a UK police report and affidavit if it was lost)
• Evidence of Indian origin through a parent or grandparent
• Your full UK or Indian birth certificate
• Home Office naturalisation certificate, where this applies
• Two 2x2 inch (51mm × 51mm) photos on a white background, taken to the Indian specification
• Proof of UK address dated within the last three months

In-person biometric enrolment now applies to most applicants at the VFS appointment, the portal inspects photo and signature files more strictly, and government fees float with the rupee. Mistakes we prevent#

• Photos taken to UK passport size instead of the Indian 2x2 inch spec
• Missing or unsigned naturalisation evidence
• An expired Indian passport submitted with no explanatory affidavit
• Parental origin documents whose names don't line up with the applicant's birth certificate
• A foreign birth certificate that still needs apostille
• Turning up at VFS with photocopies when originals are required
