A Fresh OCI card is your first Overseas Citizen of India card: a lifelong, multiple-entry document that lets people of Indian origin live, work, study, and own property in India without ever needing a visa. If you've taken British citizenship, or grew up in the UK and never held an Indian passport, it's usually the single most valuable Indian document you can hold. OCI Application Fees UK#

The official fresh OCI application fee is US$275 (plus US$3 ICWF), which converts to roughly £217–£231 depending on the exchange rate on the day you pay — it's a dollar-denominated fee, so the sterling figure moves with FX and isn't fixed. On top of that you pay the VFS service fee (£7.44) and courier if you use it. Confirm the exact current figure before you pay — this is a government charge that changes with the rupee-dollar rate, not something either we or VFS control.

Our fee is From £100 and is entirely separate: it covers preparing your application, checking your documents, formatting your photo and signature, and booking VFS. We never fold the government fee into our price, and we never let a quote come in below what the mission itself charges.

OCI Card Processing Time UK#

This is where a Fresh OCI application realistically sits and finishes: once your file is lodged at VFS, published guidance points to roughly 8 to 12 weeks of government processing, with the card typically issued 25 to 35 days after your VFS appointment in more straightforward cases. Processing time is not guaranteed by the mission and varies with application volume, the centre you use, and whether your documents raise any queries — treat any number, including ours, as a planning range rather than a promise.

There is no way to buy a faster government decision — anyone offering a guaranteed express OCI processing time in the UK is describing something the mission itself does not offer. What actually drives the variance we see case to case:

• Apostille requirements — a birth certificate issued outside India that needs apostille adds real weeks before the file even reaches VFS
• Document queries — a mismatch between a parent's name on your birth certificate and their passport is a common cause of a hold-up mid-process
• VFS appointment availability — booking a slot can itself take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the centre and season
• Application volume at the High Commission — processing extends during peak periods

None of these are things we can override, but most of them are things we can catch before your file is lodged — which is the difference between a delay discovered at week two and one discovered at week ten.

What an OCI Card Actually Gives You#

An OCI card is not citizenship and it is not a visa — it's a lifelong, multiple-entry status that removes the need for a visa on every future trip to India, and gives you the right to live, work, study, and own most types of property there (agricultural land is the main exception). It doesn't carry voting rights or eligibility for government jobs, and India does not recognise dual citizenship, so an OCI sits alongside your British passport rather than replacing anything. For most British-Indian families it replaces the recurring cost and hassle of applying for an Indian visa every time you travel.

Who Can Apply for a Fresh OCI from the UK#

There are a handful of routes in, and you only need to fit one:

• You (or your parents or grandparents) held Indian citizenship at any point from 26 January 1950 onward, and you're now a British citizen
• You were entitled to Indian citizenship at that date, even if you never formally took it up
• A parent or grandparent was an Indian citizen, and you can document the family link
• You were born and raised in the UK to Indian-citizen parents and have simply never needed an Indian passport
• You married an Indian citizen or an existing OCI holder (covered in more depth on our OCI Through Spouse page)

The one hard exclusion: nationals of Pakistan or Bangladesh cannot be granted an OCI card under any of the above.

How to Apply for an OCI Card in the UK#

Our process

3. You send scanned copies — your original documents don't leave your hands until VFS day.

5. We secure your VFS appointment — at the centre nearest you, and we hand you a printed pack to bring on the day.
6. You attend, submit originals and biometrics — the government fee is paid there, on the spot.
7. We track the file to completion — your card typically arrives 25 to 35 days after that visit, and we chase status on your behalf rather than leaving you to guess.

Documents You'll Need#

• A current British passport with at least six months left before it expires
• Your former Indian passport — if it was lost rather than surrendered, a UK police report plus a signed affidavit stands in for it
• Something that ties you to an Indian-citizen parent or grandparent
• A full birth certificate, whichever country issued it
• Your naturalisation certificate, if British citizenship is how you got here
• Two photos to the Indian 2x2 inch specification on a plain light background
• A recent utility bill, bank statement or council document confirming your UK address, dated in the last three months

If you were born outside India, your birth certificate may need to be apostilled — we tell you clearly whether that applies to you and how to arrange it, since it's one of the biggest sources of delay we see.

If your application is built around a grandparent's Indian citizenship rather than a parent's, be ready to show the fuller chain: your grandparent's Indian passport or citizenship evidence, and the birth certificate linking your parent to them, alongside your own. This is one of the more document-heavy routes into OCI eligibility, and it's worth starting the paper trail early if any of those documents are held abroad or in family records rather than to hand.

Mistakes We Prevent#

Most first-time OCI rejections and delays trace back to a short list of avoidable issues:

• A UK-sized passport photo submitted in place of the 2x2 inch Indian format
• A naturalisation certificate that's unsigned or missing entirely
• An expired Indian passport with no affidavit explaining why
• A parent's name spelled differently across the origin documents and the applicant's birth certificate
• Discovering an apostille is needed for a foreign birth certificate only after the VFS date is already booked
• Arriving at the appointment with photocopies where the rules call for originals

We also pre-format your photo and signature to the exact Indian specification — 200KB maximum, 300 DPI, and a 1:3 signature aspect ratio — so the portal accepts them the first time.

None of these are exotic requirements, but they're specific enough that a document that looks fine to you can still be rejected by the portal's automated checks. Catching that before submission, rather than after a rejection notice arrives weeks into processing, is most of what our document review actually does.

VFS and the OCI Application Process#

Every UK application for a Fresh OCI runs through VFS Global, the outsourced visa and passport partner for the Indian missions in the UK — there is no direct-to-mission route for this service. Your appointment is where you hand over original documents, give biometrics, and pay the government fee; the portal submission that gets you to that point is prepared in advance. Booking availability at VFS centres varies by season and location, and can itself run from a few days out to several weeks in busy periods, separate from the government processing clock that starts once your file is actually lodged.
