Renewed your British passport? Your OCI record has to be updated with the new passport number, ideally within 90 days of the new passport being issued. Start the moment your passport lands — the clock runs from its issue date
The 90 days are counted from the issue date printed in your new passport, not from the day you collect it or the day you fly. Treat that as a starting gun rather than a deadline: the OCI department's rejection notices routinely arrive weeks after filing, and a bounced application discovered on day 88 leaves you no room.
Late is not a dead end. This service covers your passport change either way — only the route changes:
- Inside 90 days — everything happens online. No appointment, no travel, nothing to attend.
- Past 90 days — still this service, still our same fee, but the file goes in at a VFS centre in person. We prepare it and book the slot; you attend. Budget a GBP 23 government charge payable at VFS, plus VFS's own service charge on top.
Some cases are not a link at all. If any of these describe you, the correct route is the online OCI Passport Details Update, not this service:
- A change to what's recorded on your OCI — name (marriage or otherwise), nationality, facial appearance, or an ex-spouse's name to remove. These became chargeable services on 7 July 2026 and are filed at a VFS appointment, not online.
- Something on your OCI is simply wrong — a misspelt date of birth, the wrong citizenship. Same route; we pin down exactly what your case needs first.
- A lost, stolen, or damaged OCI card — the standalone category for this closed on 7 July 2026 and these now go through Miscellaneous Services instead.
Turning 20 no longer triggers anything. The re-issue that used to be compulsory on your first passport after turning 20 was abolished on 7 July 2026. If you were bracing for it, you can stop — a straightforward passport update is all you need. A change of address, occupation, or email is also still a free online update, and we handle it under this service.

Your e-OCI card is included — no extra order, no extra fee
India launched the e-OCI card on 30 June 2026: a secure digital version of your OCI, integrated with immigration systems at Indian ports of entry. We generate yours as part of this service once your passport update is confirmed, at no additional charge. Your existing physical OCI booklet stays valid and is still accepted at immigration — the e-OCI sits alongside it.

What's changed for 2026
2026 has reshaped OCI more than any year since the scheme began. The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 came into force on 1 May, tightening compliance around keeping passport details current. The e-OCI card launched on 30 June. Then on 7 July 2026 the practical rules changed again: the scheme moved to e-OCI with physical cards no longer issued, the age-20 re-issue was abolished, the standalone lost/stolen/damaged category closed, and name, nationality, and appearance changes became chargeable services.
If you last checked the rules even a few months ago, some of what you read is already out of date — which is the single most common reason people arrive having bought the wrong service.
The portal also runs strict automated checks on photo and signature files, and small formatting faults are rejected without a clear explanation. Because we file these updates every week, we confirm the exact requirements that apply to your case before you order.
Mistakes we prevent

Timelines and what to expect
We file within 24 to 48 hours of receiving a complete set of documents. The High Commission then works through the update, which typically takes 25 to 40 days.
A passport update updates your OCI record — no new physical card is produced. Since 7 July 2026 the scheme has moved to e-OCI and physical OCI booklets are no longer issued at all. Your existing booklet stays valid and is still accepted at immigration.
You do not need to carry your old passport to travel. The 'U' (Universal) visa sticker was dispensed with on 29 January 2015 — you travel on your valid OCI card plus your current passport. That said, while an update is still processing, carrying the old passport costs nothing and can save an argument at a check-in desk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really have to re-link my OCI after a new passport?
Yes. If your OCI still points to an old passport number, Indian immigration may not accept it. Re-linking keeps your lifelong OCI valid and recognised at the border.
Can I fly to India before the transfer is finished?
You can often enter by carrying both your old and new passports together with your OCI, but airlines and immigration staff may question it. We suggest completing the link first to avoid any hold-up.
Will I get a fresh OCI card or just a sticker?
Under current policy you usually receive a new OCI card. Occasionally a U-sticker is applied to the passport instead. Either outcome carries the same validity and works the same way.
What if my OCI card has been lost?
You can still proceed. A lost card means applying for a duplicate OCI alongside the transfer, which needs an affidavit and a police report. We prepare both as a normal part of the job.
Is there a deadline to complete the transfer?
No fixed cut-off exists, but you should finish before your next journey to India. Starting the moment your new passport arrives is the safest approach.
Does an OCI Link case need a VFS appointment?
For most OCI Link cases, no. The update runs entirely on the OCI portal with no centre visit, and we upload within 24 to 48 hours of receiving your documents.
Which passport should I carry while the link is processing?
Carry both. Until the High Commission confirms the update, always travel with the old passport originally linked to your OCI as well as your new one, since immigration may ask for the original.
