Indian passport renewal fees in the UK#

Every figure below is billed as booklet fee + £2 ICWF + the £29.78 VFS Global service charge, per applicant. These are the sterling amounts the counter actually charges.

The Tatkaal uplift is a flat £92 on the 36-page adult booklet — £93 becomes £185 — not the higher surcharge some older guidance still quotes. Note also that the lost-or-damaged replacement and the Tatkaal booklet happen to carry the same fee; they are different services that land on the same number.

If you are comparing quotes, be wary of any that prices the VFS service charge at only a few pounds. That lower figure is the fee on Indian visa applications, published site-wide as a template value across the VFS site, and it has never been what the passport counter bills.

Tatkaal: where it works, and when it will be refused#

Tatkaal is the out-of-turn service, and the honest position is that a lot of people who ask for it are not eligible for it. Two things decide whether it is even an option.

Geography. Tatkaal is accepted at London and Birmingham only. It is not available in Edinburgh, and if your jurisdiction is Scotland this simply is not a route open to you, regardless of how urgent your travel is.

Grounds. A Tatkaal request is refused outright for:

• any change of name
• a passport that expired more than three years ago
• a minor applying with only one parent's consent
• an applicant with no valid UK visa or residence permit

We confirm your Tatkaal eligibility before you order rather than after, because paying for an option that will be refused is the sort of thing that costs you both money and the time you were trying to buy.

On timing, the published figures disagree with one another: VFS states 7 to 10 days in one place and 3 to 5 working days in another. We quote you both rather than picking the flattering one, and we plan around the longer.

Documents you'll need#

• Your current Indian passport, with every page scanned.
• Your UKVI Share Code from gov.uk (this now stands in for the old BRP card).
• Proof of UK address dated within the last three months.
• Two photographs to the ICAO 35×45mm specification.
• Your Indian address and local police-station details.
• Your marriage certificate, if you are changing your name.
• A UK police crime reference number, if the passport was lost or damaged.
• Any supporting evidence for other changes you are making.

The annexures — which one your case actually needs#

The annexure set was substituted wholesale by the Passport (Amendment) Rules 2016, and the renumbering is real: the old Annexure G became C, and the old H became D. Plenty of guidance online still cites the pre-2016 letters, which is how people end up preparing the wrong form.

• Annexure C — a declaration where a parent's consent cannot be obtained. Its own tick-box grounds include residing abroad and unable to provide consent, and travelling abroad and unable to provide consent.
• Annexure D — the standard declaration by parents or guardian, and the default on every minor application.
• Annexure E — a general declaration required on every UK re-issue, adults included.
• Annexure F — how and where a passport was lost or damaged.
• Annexure J — a joint declaration in lieu of a marriage certificate, which requires a recent joint photograph of both spouses.

Two things about this trip people up constantly. First, the test for C versus D is whether consent can be obtained, not where the parent lives. An overseas parent who can sign uses Annexure D, signed remotely. Only an overseas parent who genuinely cannot uses Annexure C.

Second, there is a genuine UK divergence from the position in India: from the UK, Annexure C must be notarised by a UK Notary Public — explicitly not a solicitor — unless a custody order is produced, along with a notarised explanation letter. Every annexure carries your UK address.

One more trap worth naming, because it appears on a great many pages: the old Annexure E was the change-of-name, deed-poll and sworn-affidavit form. Today's Annexure E is an unrelated general declaration. Any guidance telling you "Annexure E is the deed poll form" is citing a form that has not existed since 2016.

Name changes — read this before you pay for a deed poll#

This is the section we most often wish people had read first.

A commercial UK deed poll is not sufficient on its own. The High Commission of India in London requires its own "Name Change Deed" form, executed before a UK Notary Public or a consular officer. Treat a UK deed poll as supporting evidence rather than as the document that does the job, and note that it does not remove the two-newspaper-advertisement and two-public-document requirements either.

For adding a spouse's surname, the 2016 gazette says no proof of marriage or dissolution is required — but HCI London and CGI Birmingham both ask for a marriage certificate or an Annexure J anyway. Bring one. We would rather tell you what the counter actually asks for than what the rule book says it may ask for.

And remember that a name change is one of the grounds on which Tatkaal is refused outright, so if you are changing your name you should be planning against the standard timeline from the outset.

What's changed for 2026#

The rules move quietly, and two recent shifts have tripped up many people applying alone. First, the BRP card was retired in 2025 — VFS now expects a UKVI Share Code instead. Second, the accepted photo size is ICAO 35×45mm (the old 51×51mm print is rejected). Government fees were also revised with effect from 1 July 2026, which is why figures published before that date read low.

You may also have seen talk of biometric e-Passports with an embedded RFID chip arriving in the UK. We are not going to give you a rollout date for that, because none of the three UK missions has published one, and the dates circulating are not traceable to any official source. Mistakes we prevent#

• A photo at the old 51×51mm size instead of the required 35×45mm.
• Shadows on the face or background that fail the ICAO standard.
• Selecting the wrong VFS jurisdiction.
• Forgetting the UKVI Share Code.
• Preparing Annexure C when the parent could simply have signed Annexure D, or getting Annexure C signed by a solicitor rather than a Notary Public.
• Relying on a commercial UK deed poll for a name change instead of the High Commission's own Name Change Deed.
• Missing self-attestation signatures.
• An incomplete Indian address or the wrong police station.
• A signature that touches the border of its box.
• Paying for Tatkaal in a jurisdiction that doesn't offer it, or on a case that is refused outright.

Timing and related services#

Standard renewals take 4 to 6 weeks from VFS submission. Tatkaal, where you qualify and where your jurisdiction offers it, is published as 7 to 10 days in one VFS source and 3 to 5 working days in another. Because appointment slots can take weeks to open, we suggest starting 8 to 10 weeks ahead of travel.
