What's changed for 2026
The rules move quietly, and two recent shifts have tripped up many people applying alone. First, the BRP card was retired in 2025 — VFS now expects a UKVI Share Code instead. Second, the accepted photo size changed to ICAO 35×45mm (the old 51×51mm print is now rejected). On top of that, biometric e-Passports with an embedded RFID chip began rolling out through the Birmingham jurisdiction in 2026; we let you know when that applies to your case. Mistakes we prevent

Standard renewals take 4 to 5 weeks from VFS submission, and Tatkal is 5 to 10 working days if you qualify. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I renew my Indian passport while living in the UK?
Yes. Indian nationals based in the UK apply through VFS Global centres, which process passport work on behalf of the Indian High Commission. You do not travel to India for a routine renewal.
How long will my renewal take?
Standard processing usually runs 4 to 5 weeks from the day your application is submitted at VFS. Where you qualify, Tatkal (urgent) issuance is typically 5 to 10 working days. We confirm current timings and your Tatkal eligibility before you order.
Do I have to attend the VFS centre myself?
Yes. VFS captures biometrics in person, so your attendance is required. Everything leading up to that visit — the Passport Seva application, document checks, photo formatting and the appointment booking — we take care of remotely.
I recently became a British citizen. Should I renew or surrender?
India does not permit dual citizenship, so you cannot keep an Indian passport once you hold British nationality. In that case you surrender the Indian passport, obtain a Surrender Certificate, and then apply for OCI rather than renewing. My passport was lost or stolen — can I still get a new one?
Yes. A lost or stolen passport can be replaced. You will need a UK police report and a sworn affidavit; we prepare the affidavit and guide you through the report so the file is accepted.
What is the UKVI Share Code and why do you need it?
Since BRP cards were withdrawn in 2025, VFS relies on a UKVI Share Code from gov.uk to confirm your UK immigration status instead of the old card. You generate this code and send it to us with your documents; a missing Share Code is now one of the most common causes of rejection.
Can you handle a name change on my passport at the same time?
Yes. We process name changes for marriage, divorce or a legal deed change, as well as adding or removing a spouse's name. Please include the relevant certificate (for example your marriage certificate) with your documents so we can evidence the change correctly.
