Canada Visitor Visa From the UK on an Indian Passport (2026)
By Gagandeep SinghUpdated Editorial standards

A reader emailed us last winter, baffled. Her three colleagues — all British passport holders — had each filled in a Canadian eTA form over their lunch break, paid a few dollars, and had approval in their inbox before the kettle boiled. She did exactly the same thing on an Indian passport, hit submit, and the system spat her back out. No approval, no clear error, just a dead end. Her flight to a Toronto conference was three weeks away.
She isn't alone. This is one of the most common Canada mistakes Indian-passport UK residents make: assuming that because you live, work and pay tax in Britain, you travel like a Briton. You don't. Your nationality decides the document — not your address.
Here's how it actually works in 2026.
The core rule: Indians are visa-required, not eTA-eligible
Canada splits the world into two buckets: visa-exempt nationals (who can use the cheap, instant electronic Travel Authorisation, the eTA) and visa-required nationals (who need a full Temporary Resident Visa, or TRV — the proper visitor visa sticker in your passport).
Indian passport holders sit firmly in the visa-required bucket. That's true whether you're applying from Delhi or from a flat in Manchester. The eTA your British colleagues used simply isn't the document for you.
If you hold an Indian passport, a standard eTA will not get you to Canada. You need a TRV (visitor visa) — unless you qualify for the narrow eTA-X air exception described below. Don't book non-refundable flights until your travel document is confirmed. Verify your category on IRCC's official site, not on a forum.
So the practical question becomes: do you need the full TRV, or do you qualify for the one genuine shortcut?
The one shortcut: the eTA-X (and its limits)
There is a single, often-missed exception that can save eligible travellers a full visa application. It's commonly called the eTA-X.
Based on current IRCC guidance (always confirm live, as eligibility rules shift), an Indian national may be able to travel to Canada by air on an eTA instead of a TRV if they meet at least one of these:
- They have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years, or
- They currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa.
That second condition catches a lot of UK-based Indians — plenty of you hold a B1/B2 US visitor visa already. If so, the eTA-X can be a fast, low-cost route.
But read the limits carefully:
- It applies to air travel only. Arriving by land or sea (say, driving across from the US) generally still requires a full TRV.
- It's an eligibility shortcut, not a guarantee. The system can still refuse you, and a border officer always has the final say on entry.
- Your US visa or past Canadian visa must be genuinely valid for it to count.
Before starting a full visitor visa application, check whether you qualify for the eTA-X — especially if you hold a current US visa. If you do, and you're flying, you may avoid the longer TRV process entirely. If there's any doubt, default to the TRV; an overconfident eTA can leave you stranded at the gate.
If you don't qualify for the eTA-X — or you're travelling by land or sea — it's the TRV route for you.
Who needs what: a quick side-by-side
This is the single biggest source of confusion in mixed UK households and offices, so here it is plainly:
| Indian passport | British passport | |
|---|---|---|
| Document | TRV visa | eTA |
| Apply | Online plus biometrics | Online only |
| Biometrics | Required | Not required |
If you've been told "just do what your British friends did," that table is the reason it didn't work. If you're mapping out several trips, our guides to applying for a Schengen visa and an Australia visitor visa from the UK on an Indian passport follow exactly the same logic.
Applying for the TRV from the UK as a third-country resident
You do not have to fly to India. IRCC explicitly allows you to apply as a resident of a third country — in your case, the UK.
The process, at a high level:
How the TRV application works from the UK
- Apply online via IRCC — create your account on the official IRCC portal and complete the visitor visa (TRV) application. List the UK as your country of residence.
- Upload your proof of lawful UK status — your BRP, eVisa share code, or ILR confirmation. This is central to showing you'll return to the UK, not overstay in Canada.
- Pay the fees — the visitor visa is currently C$100 (single or multiple entry), plus biometrics. Treat all figures as 2026 estimates and confirm live on IRCC.
- Give biometrics in the UK — once instructed, book and attend a Canada VFS Global centre in the UK to provide fingerprints and a photo. Biometrics are currently C$85 per person or C$170 for a family.
- Wait for the decision — if approved, your passport is returned with the TRV sticker. Processing times vary; build in a buffer before any fixed travel date.
Note that the whole thing runs from Britain. Your lawful UK status is an asset, not a hurdle — it's some of the strongest evidence of ties you can offer, far stronger than what an applicant filing from India can usually show.
If preparing and proofing all of that feels like a lot, that's exactly the kind of third-country e-visa work we handle day to day on our third-country e-visa service.
Fees in 2026 (hedge — confirm live)
As a rough planning guide, in current Canadian dollars:
- Visitor visa (TRV): C$100 — same fee whether single or multiple entry.
- Biometrics: C$85 per individual, or C$170 for a family applying together.
- VFS service charges: the centre adds its own handling fee on top.
Two caveats. First, these float with the INR–GBP–CAD picture and IRCC's own fee schedule, so always check the live figure before paying. Second, the fee is the easy part — the application content is what gets people refused.
Single vs multiple entry: the 2024 change that still bites
For years, Canada quietly defaulted most approved visitors to a 10-year, multiple-entry visa. That convenience is gone.
Since 6 November 2024, IRCC ended that automatic default. Now an officer decides single vs multiple entry — and the validity — case by case. In practice that means:
- More scrutiny of your funds (can you actually pay for this trip without working illegally?).
- More scrutiny of your ties (will you genuinely go home?).
- Less room to assume you'll get a long, reusable visa just because someone you know did in 2022.
This is precisely where a thin application gets punished and a careful one is rewarded.
Dual intent and ties: your UK life is the strongest card you hold
Canada doesn't expect you to have zero interest in Canada — that's the principle of dual intent. You can openly love the country and still be a genuine temporary visitor. What an officer wants to see is a credible reason to return at the end of your trip.
For a UK-based Indian, your ties are unusually strong:
- Lawful residence — BRP, eVisa, or ILR showing a settled UK life.
- Employment — a job, a contract, an employer letter, recent payslips.
- Family and home — a spouse, children, a tenancy or mortgage in Britain.
- History — prior compliant travel (Schengen, US, others) showing you return when you say you will.
That combination is far more persuasive than what most India-based applicants can present, and it's the heart of a tight TRV file.
Don't just attach documents — connect them. A short cover letter that ties your UK job, home, family and return date together does more than a folder of loose PDFs. Officers read intent, not just paperwork.
The Super Visa: for parents and grandparents
If you're a Canadian citizen or PR and want a parent or grandparent to visit long-term, the Super Visa is a different and powerful option:
- Multi-entry, valid up to 10 years.
- Stays of up to 5 years per entry (far longer than a normal visitor).
- The host must meet an income (LICO) test.
- The applicant needs medical insurance of at least C$100,000, valid for at least one year. Since 28 January 2025, approved foreign insurers are also accepted (previously it had to be Canadian).
It's not a visitor visa with extra steps — it's its own stream, with its own evidence. Confirm the current LICO threshold and insurer list on IRCC before applying.
DIY or use a service — the honest version
Plenty of people lodge a Canada TRV themselves, and you may well be one of them. The form is in English and the IRCC portal, while clunky, is navigable.
DIY makes sense when your case is simple: you hold a current US visa (so the eTA-X may apply), or you've travelled widely and compliantly, your funds are obvious, and your ties are easy to document.
A service earns its keep when any of these are true: you've been refused before, your funds come from multiple or recently moved sources, you're applying as a family, you're unsure whether eTA-X applies to you, or you simply can't afford a refusal before a fixed trip. Our value on the visitor visa isn't insider access — there's no shortcut to buy. It's assembling a tight, ties-strong application that pre-empts the officer's doubts. See exactly what that covers on our third-country e-visa service.
One honest cross-sell boundary: if you're thinking past a visit toward Canada PR or Express Entry, that's a different world — and it requires an Indian Police Clearance Certificate (plus a UK PCC if you've lived here 6+ months). PCCs are genuinely our wheelhouse; see getting an Indian PCC for Canada and Australia. For the visitor visa, we're not selling you a PR dream — just a well-built application.

If Canada is one stop on a bigger plan, it's worth seeing the whole picture. The principles here — apply from the UK, prove lawful status, build ties — repeat across destinations. Read our overview of third-country e-visas for UK residents, and if the US or Europe is also on your list, our guides to the US visa from the UK on an Indian passport and the Schengen visa from the UK on an Indian passport cover the same ground for those routes.
The bottom line
For an Indian passport holder in the UK, Canada is very doable — but not on an eTA, and not by copying your British colleagues. Confirm whether the eTA-X shortcut applies to you (especially if you hold a US visa). If not, lodge a clean TRV from the UK, give biometrics at VFS, and let your UK residence and job do the heavy lifting on ties. Expect more scrutiny on entry type and funds than in years past, and prepare accordingly.
