The Specs We Work To#

We verify the live specification before every order, because portals adjust these without much warning — but as a general guide, this is roughly what the OCI portal currently asks for.

• JPEG format
• Around 200 KB or under
• Plain white or light-coloured background
• Full front-facing view, face filling most of the frame, neutral expression
• Glasses permitted if there's no glare
• Religious head coverings permitted, provided no shadow falls across the face

Signature

• JPEG format, around 200 KB or under
• White background, signed in black or blue ink
• Roughly a 1:3 aspect ratio
• Signature clear of the box edges for applicants aged five and over
• A thumb impression in place of a signature for children under five — left thumb for boys, right thumb for girls

Passport Seva runs a different spec again — closer to a 35×45mm crop (roughly 630×810 pixels) on a plain white background, more like a conventional passport photo than the OCI portal's square format. Why the Same Photo Doesn't Travel Between Portals#

It's a natural assumption that one solid photo covers every application, and it's usually what causes the rejection. The OCI portal wants a square crop; Passport Seva wants a taller rectangle; the e-Visa portal has its own version again. A photo can be sharp, well-lit, and correctly backgrounded and still fail an automated check purely because the aspect ratio doesn't match what that particular portal expects. If a Portal Still Rejects the File Afterwards#

Uncommon, since we work from the current specification rather than a remembered one — but portals do occasionally tighten a rule without notice.
