Perfect portal-ready photos in minutes
Every Indian government portal has its own idea of what a compliant photo and signature look like — exact pixel dimensions, exact file size, exact format — and the error you get when one of those is slightly off almost never explains which one. NriDirect shapes your photo and signature to the precise requirement for the OCI portal, Passport Seva, or the Indian e-Visa portal and sends the finished files back within 24 hours, usually the same working day. You keep control of the actual application; we just make sure the files themselves are never the reason it stalls. Standalone job, from £20.
This page covers formatting only — we hand back finished files and you upload them yourself. If a portal is actively rejecting something right now and you'd rather someone else diagnose the exact error and push the submission through, that's a different job: see OCI & Passport Document Upload Assistance. Rule of thumb: nothing's broken yet, just needs shaping — this page. Something's already failing and you want it fixed and submitted — the other one.
We verify the live specification before every order, because portals adjust these without much warning — but as a general guide, this is roughly what the OCI portal currently asks for.
Photo
Signature
Passport Seva runs a different spec again — closer to a 35×45mm crop (roughly 630×810 pixels) on a plain white background, more like a conventional passport photo than the OCI portal's square format. We match the file to whichever portal you name, because a file built for one routinely fails the other.
It's a natural assumption that one solid photo covers every application, and it's usually what causes the rejection. The OCI portal wants a square crop; Passport Seva wants a taller rectangle; the e-Visa portal has its own version again. A photo can be sharp, well-lit, and correctly backgrounded and still fail an automated check purely because the aspect ratio doesn't match what that particular portal expects. We build a separate file for each portal you're applying through rather than stretching one image to fit all of them.
Uncommon, since we work from the current specification rather than a remembered one — but portals do occasionally tighten a rule without notice. If it happens, send the exact wording of the error rather than a general "it didn't work," and we'll check the file against the live requirement and either correct it or tell you plainly if the cause is something other than the file. No extra charge for that follow-up within a reasonable window of the original order.
The photo rules are the same as an adult's. The signature isn't: children under five are expected to submit a thumb impression instead — left thumb for boys, right thumb for girls — and we apply that automatically once you tell us the applicant's age, rather than sending back a signature file that was never going to pass.
You don't need to book a photo session or find a photo booth. Most people already have something usable — a phone photo taken against a plain wall, or an old passport-style photo — and in the majority of cases we can crop, adjust, and reformat that existing image rather than asking for a reshoot. We'll only ask for a new photo if the lighting, background, or angle genuinely can't be corrected, and we'll tell you exactly why before asking.
Your photo resized to the correct pixel dimensions for the portal you name, your signature reshaped to the required ratio with clean contrast, both files compressed to sit under the size limit without losing enough quality to fail a separate check, and a review against the background and framing rules before anything is sent back. Running applications on more than one portal at once? We can build a set for each inside a single order.
Portal requirements move, sometimes without any public notice, and a dimension that was accepted last year can fail today. We check our reference figures against the live government and VFS standards before every order rather than working from a saved spec sheet. If we spot that a rule has genuinely changed, we'll tell you plainly — and if what you actually need is help with an upload that's already failing rather than a reshoot, we'll say so and point you to the right service instead of taking a job we can't fix.
Finished files typically land within 24 hours, often the same working day. If the portal is actively rejecting a file rather than you simply needing one shaped correctly, OCI & Passport Document Upload Assistance is the service to book instead. For the whole application handled from scratch, see Fresh OCI Application or Indian Passport Renewal. Our free OCI document checklist tool is worth a look too, to confirm nothing else on your document list is missing.
We reformat photos and signatures for UK applicants routinely, so we already know which format each portal's automated check accepts and which small flaw causes a silent rejection. Files are handled under UK ICO registration and aren't shared or resold. You can reach us by phone, WhatsApp, or email throughout business hours.

The OCI portal, Passport Seva, and the Indian e-Visa portal. Each has its own dimension, format, and size rules, so tell us which one you're applying through and we build the file to match — after confirming the current spec is still what we've got on file.
A recent picture against a plain, light background, taken in reasonable light on any modern phone. You don't need to crop, resize, or adjust it yourself first — send the original and we do the rest.
Within 24 hours, and often the same working day if you send everything during business hours. You'll get the photo and signature back by email, ready to attach to your application.
No — each portal wants a differently shaped file, so a photo built for OCI won't necessarily pass Passport Seva or the e-Visa portal. If you're applying through more than one at once, tell us and we'll prepare a version for each within the same order.
Both. We shape the signature to the required aspect ratio, keep it under the file-size limit, and make sure the ink reads clearly against the white background. For children under five, we apply a thumb impression instead — left thumb for boys, right thumb for girls.
Yes. We operate under UK ICO registration, and your files are used solely to prepare your application documents — never sold or passed on to anyone else.
That's rare because we work from the current specification rather than an outdated one, but if it happens, send us the exact error text and we'll check the file against the live requirement and correct it or explain what's actually causing the rejection.
This one hands you back correctly formatted files and you do the upload yourself. If a portal is already rejecting something and you'd rather someone else diagnose the specific error and push the submission through, that's our OCI & Passport Document Upload Assistance service instead.
It can be. Portals generally want a plain, light, even background with no shadows or patterns. An uneven or grey background is a common cause of automated rejection, and where it can be corrected without a reshoot, we'll fix it as part of the job.
The photo follows the same rules as an adult's. The signature doesn't — children under five submit a thumb impression instead of a signature, left thumb for boys and right thumb for girls. Tell us the applicant's age and we'll apply the correct format automatically.
