Becoming a British citizen closes one door under Indian law and opens another. India will not let you keep an Indian passport once you hold foreign nationality, and it will not issue you an OCI card until that passport has been formally surrendered. So the journey is really two applications in sequence: first the Surrender Certificate, then the OCI card built on top of it. Run apart, that means two portals, two VFS visits, and two document packs to keep straight over several months. How it works
Two stages, in order — surrender first, OCI second:
- Stage 1 checklist — a document list tailored to your case reaches your inbox within one working day.
- You share scans by WhatsApp or email. No originals change hands at the preparation stage.
- We prepare the surrender application on the official Indian government portal and book your VFS appointment.
- Your print pack arrives — completed forms and appointment letter, with sample-marked signing points.
- Surrender visit — you attend VFS, hand in your original Indian passport, and pay the £45 VFS surrender fee on the day.
- Stage 2 begins — once your Surrender Certificate is issued, you forward it to us and we open the OCI booking straight away.
- OCI visit — you attend VFS to submit your OCI documents. Some applicants complete both stages at a single VFS visit; we confirm whether that works for your case.
- OCI card issued — usually 6 to 8 weeks after the OCI submission.
Documents you'll need

- Your original Indian passport — every page; keep a colour scan of all pages before you submit it
- Your current British passport, valid for at least six more months
- Your Home Office naturalisation certificate
- Proof of UK address dated within the last three months
- Two recent 2x2 inch photos on a white background (the Indian specification, not the UK one)
- Your full birth certificate (Indian or UK)
- Proof of Indian origin through a parent or grandparent
- A marriage certificate, if your name has changed since the Indian passport was issued

VFS and Indian government fees are billed separately by VFS — for example the £45 surrender fee paid on the day. Those are official charges, not part of our service fee. Because these amounts move with VFS and currency changes, we confirm the current figures and rules with you before you order.

The underlying law has not moved: surrender is still compulsory before OCI, and India still does not recognise dual citizenship. What shifts from year to year is the detail around it — VFS appointment availability, the government and VFS fee amounts, and small portal requirement updates. Rather than quote you last year's numbers, we reconfirm the live fees, timelines, and document rules against the current High Commission position at the point you order, so your pack matches what VFS is actually asking for today.
Mistakes we prevent

Can my children apply at the same time?
Yes. Minors can apply alongside a parent's submission. Each child is a separate application, but we coordinate the family pack so the VFS appointments line up.
Can I keep both Indian and British citizenship?
No — India does not recognise dual nationality, and holding an Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship is an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967. The OCI card is the long-term route back: it gives lifelong visa-free travel and the right to live, work, and own property in India, though it is not citizenship.
