In practice that means two separate government filings, run one after the other, months apart if you handle them as separate orders. Why Bundle Surrender and OCI Instead of Booking Them Separately
The OCI portal will not accept an application from anyone still holding an uncancelled Indian passport — the Surrender Certificate has to exist first, as a hard prerequisite rather than a formality. Run as two separate orders, that usually means two rounds of document collection, two VFS appointments booked independently, and a gap in the middle where nothing moves until the certificate lands. Bundling them removes the duplicate admin: we hold your documents once, prepare both filings in sequence, and move straight into the OCI stage the moment your certificate is confirmed rather than waiting for you to come back and reorder.

What It Costs
Two official government charges apply across the two stages, both paid directly to the mission or VFS, not to us:
- Surrender Certificate — £61.78 all-in: a £30 government fee, a £2 ICWF surcharge, and the £29.78 VFS Global service charge
- Fresh OCI application — £247.78 all-in: a £215 registration fee, a £3 ICWF surcharge (note OCI carries £3, not the £2 charged on passport services), and the £29.78 VFS service charge again for the second appointment
That is £309.56 in government charges across the two stages, per applicant, and it is a fixed sterling total rather than a moving target.
Two things worth knowing, because they cause more confusion on this journey than anything else. The OCI fee is published by the Ministry of Home Affairs in US dollars, and a great many sites convert that into a sterling range and present the result as the price — but VFS Global UK bills a fixed £215 regardless of the exchange rate, so a converted figure is a number you will never be asked for. And a VFS service charge quoted at only a few pounds is the fee on Indian visa applications, published site-wide as a template value; the passport and OCI counters both bill £29.78.
Government fees are revised periodically, so we still confirm the live amounts before either appointment.

How the Two-Stage Process Works
Our process
- We confirm the sequence applies to you — a short conversation establishes that surrender genuinely comes first in your case, and flags anything unusual (a lost passport, a name that's changed since it was issued).
- Stage one documents come together — a checklist arrives within a working day, and you send scans; your original passport doesn't move until the VFS visit itself.
- The surrender filing goes in — we prepare the government submission and book your first VFS appointment.
- You attend and hand over the original passport — along with the £61.78 in government and VFS charges, paid on the day.
- The Surrender Certificate is issued — typically within one to two weeks of that appointment; you forward it to us the moment it arrives.
- We open the OCI filing immediately — no need to resend documents we already hold; only the OCI-specific items are requested fresh.
- A second VFS appointment for OCI biometrics — some applicants can combine both visits into one slot; we check whether that's realistic for your centre and timing.
- The OCI grant is issued — VFS Global UK publishes 6 to 8 weeks from the second submission, and we track it until it lands. Since 7 July 2026 the grant arrives digitally as an e-OCI rather than as a posted booklet.
Documents You'll Need Across Both Stages
- The Indian passport you're surrendering, with every page scanned and kept before you hand over the original
- Your current British passport, valid for at least six more months
- Your Home Office naturalisation certificate
- A UK address document dated within the last three months
- Two photos to the Indian OCI specification: 2x2 inches on a plain light background
- Your full birth certificate
- Proof connecting you to an Indian-citizen parent or grandparent
- A marriage certificate, if your name has changed since the Indian passport was issued
We tell you at the outset which of these are needed for stage one, which for stage two, and which cover both — so nothing gets requested from you twice.
If your name has changed between the Indian passport being issued and your British naturalisation — through marriage, for instance — declare it at the checklist stage rather than at VFS. A mismatch discovered at the appointment itself is a common cause of a filing being sent back for correction, which adds weeks you don't need to lose.
How Long the Whole Journey Takes
Plan for roughly 10 to 12 weeks start to finish. The Surrender Certificate is normally issued 1 to 2 weeks after the first VFS visit; VFS Global UK then publishes 6 to 8 weeks for the OCI stage after the second submission.
We should be straight with you that the OCI figure is not settled at source: VFS's own FAQ still carries a shorter window and the Ministry of Home Affairs targets about 30 days from acknowledgement. We plan around the longest published figure because that is the one you can safely build travel around. VFS appointment availability at either stage adds time on top, and we'll tell you honestly if your plans are tight against the schedule rather than promising a date we can't guarantee.
Mistakes We Prevent
- Attempting to submit the OCI application before the Surrender Certificate has actually been issued, which the portal rejects outright
- Continuing to use the Indian passport for travel after naturalising, which risks a penalty under the Indian Passport Act, 1967
- Handing the original passport to VFS without keeping a full colour scan of every page first
- Turning up with UK-specification photos instead of the required Indian 2x2 inch format
- Bringing photocopies to an appointment that requires originals
- Leaving a name change between the two passports undeclared, which causes a mismatch the OCI stage will query
Is It Too Late to Surrender an Old Indian Passport?
No. There's no time limit on surrendering — we regularly handle cases where someone naturalised a decade or more ago and the passport simply sat in a drawer since. A short explanatory letter is sometimes asked for in these cases, and we draft that as part of the service rather than leaving you to write it.
There's also no requirement that surrender and OCI happen close together in time. Some clients naturalised years before deciding they now want an OCI card — perhaps a family visit to India is coming up, or a property matter has made the visa-free travel worth having. Whatever the gap between naturalisation and today, the process itself is unchanged; the only genuinely time-sensitive part of this whole journey is getting the surrender done before the OCI application can go in at all.
What If I Only Discover Mid-Way That I Need Both Stages?
This happens fairly often: someone books what they think is a standalone OCI application, only to find at VFS that their old Indian passport was never formally surrendered and the appointment can't proceed. If that's already happened to you, we can usually pick up from wherever you are — whether that's an unused Surrender Certificate sitting in an inbox, or a passport you haven't yet sent anywhere — rather than starting the whole bundle from the very first step.

What Doesn't Change Between the Two Stages
It's worth being clear about what carries over and what doesn't. Your proof of UK address, your birth certificate, and your naturalisation certificate are useful at both stages and only need collecting once. What doesn't carry over is the passport itself — the original goes to VFS at the surrender appointment and doesn't come back, so the OCI stage works from the certificate that replaces it, plus a fresh set of OCI-specific documents. What You Receive at the End: the e-OCI
Worth knowing before you start, because most guidance still describes a booklet arriving in the post. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the e-OCI on 30 June 2026, and from 7 July 2026 VFS Global UK no longer issues the printed OCI booklet as standard. Your grant at the end of this journey comes through digitally. The Ministry's wording is that it "may be presented in digital form at Immigration Check Posts and to airlines whenever required." Downloading it from the portal is free of charge.
There is a small practical upside to this on a bundled journey specifically: you are not waiting on a physical card in the post at the end of an already two-stage process.

Do I have to surrender my Indian passport before applying for OCI?
Yes, and there's no way around it — the OCI portal checks for a valid Surrender Certificate before it will accept your application. If you're still holding an uncancelled Indian passport, that's the first thing that needs to happen, not an optional extra.

Do I need to visit an office in person to use this service?
No — everything on our side runs by WhatsApp and email, with scans sent from home. The only two in-person requirements are the VFS appointments themselves: one for the surrender, one for OCI biometrics. Some applicants manage to combine both into a single visit, and we check whether that's realistic for you.
I naturalised years ago and never surrendered my Indian passport — can I still do this?
Yes. There's no deadline for surrendering, and a late surrender is one of the more common cases we handle rather than an unusual one. Some late cases benefit from a short explanatory letter, which we prepare as part of the service.
My Indian passport has been lost, not just unsurrendered — does that change anything?
It adds a step rather than blocking the process. You'll need a UK police report and a signed affidavit covering the loss, plus a copy of the old passport if you happen to still have one anywhere. We provide the affidavit wording and talk you through what else the loss requires.
Can my children go through this alongside me?
Yes. Each child needs their own separate application, but we coordinate the paperwork and appointment timing so a family isn't juggling appointments on different days across different stages.
Why can't I just keep the Indian passport and the OCI card together?
India doesn't recognise dual citizenship, and holding onto an Indian passport after taking foreign nationality is an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967. The OCI card is the designed replacement — it gives lifelong visa-free access and the right to live, work and own most property in India, without being citizenship itself.
What's the difference between this bundle and the standalone Surrender Certificate service?
The standalone service stops once your certificate is issued — useful if that's genuinely all you need right now, or if OCI isn't something you want yet. This bundle carries straight on into the OCI application the moment the certificate lands, under one combined fee, so you're not starting a second order from zero.
Is a Surrender Certificate the same thing as cancelling my passport myself?
No — you can't cancel an Indian passport yourself. The Surrender Certificate is the official document the mission issues once you've formally handed the passport over at a VFS appointment, and it's that certificate, not the physical passport handover alone, that the OCI portal checks for.
Do the government fees for surrender and OCI change over time?
