Surrender Your Indian Passport and Apply for OCI from the UK

Take up British citizenship and Indian law closes one door while opening another: you're no longer allowed to hold an Indian passport, and you can't be granted an OCI card until that passport has been formally surrendered. In practice that means two separate government filings, run one after the other, months apart if you handle them as separate orders. This service runs both as a single managed process — one point of contact, one document review, one fee — instead of you re-explaining your situation twice and juggling two VFS bookings on your own.

Why Bundle Surrender and OCI Instead of Booking Them Separately#

The OCI portal will not accept an application from anyone still holding an uncancelled Indian passport — the Surrender Certificate has to exist first, as a hard prerequisite rather than a formality. Run as two separate orders, that usually means two rounds of document collection, two VFS appointments booked independently, and a gap in the middle where nothing moves until the certificate lands. What It Costs#

Two official government charges apply across the two stages, both paid directly to the mission or VFS, not to us:

• Surrender Certificate: the official fee is £20, plus a small ICWF surcharge and the VFS service charge (£7.44)
• Fresh OCI application: the official fee is US$275 plus US$3 ICWF — roughly £217 to £231 depending on the day's exchange rate — plus the VFS service charge again for the second appointment

Both of those figures move over time and the OCI fee specifically floats with the dollar rate, so we confirm the exact live amount before either appointment rather than quoting a number that might already be stale.

Our own fee for running the combined process is From £160 — less than booking the two services separately would cost, because the second stage's document review starts from what we already hold rather than from scratch. It covers preparing both filings, both VFS bookings, and tracking the whole journey through to your card. Government and VFS charges are never folded into that figure.

How the Two-Stage Process Works#

Our process

1. We confirm the sequence applies to you — a short conversation establishes that surrender genuinely comes first in your case, and flags anything unusual (a lost passport, a name that's changed since it was issued).
2. Stage one documents come together — a checklist arrives within a working day, and you send scans; your original passport doesn't move until the VFS visit itself.
3. The surrender filing goes in — we prepare the government submission and book your first VFS appointment.
4. You attend and hand over the original passport — along with the £20 government fee and VFS charge, paid on the day.
5. The Surrender Certificate is issued — typically within one to two weeks of that appointment; you forward it to us the moment it arrives.
6. We open the OCI filing immediately — no need to resend documents we already hold; only the OCI-specific items are requested fresh.
7. A second VFS appointment for OCI biometrics — some applicants can combine both visits into one slot; we check whether that's realistic for your centre and timing.
8. The OCI card is issued — usually 25 to 35 days after that second appointment, tracked by us until it's in your hands.

Documents You'll Need Across Both Stages#

• The Indian passport you're surrendering, with every page scanned and kept before you hand over the original
• Your current British passport, valid for at least six more months
• Your Home Office naturalisation certificate
• A UK address document dated within the last three months
• Two photos to the Indian OCI specification: 2x2 inches on a plain light background
• Your full birth certificate
• Proof connecting you to an Indian-citizen parent or grandparent
• A marriage certificate, if your name has changed since the Indian passport was issued

We tell you at the outset which of these are needed for stage one, which for stage two, and which cover both — so nothing gets requested from you twice.

If your name has changed between the Indian passport being issued and your British naturalisation — through marriage, for instance — declare it at the checklist stage rather than at VFS. A mismatch discovered at the appointment itself is a common cause of a filing being sent back for correction, which adds weeks you don't need to lose.

How Long the Whole Journey Takes#

Plan for roughly 8 to 10 weeks start to finish. The Surrender Certificate is normally issued 1 to 2 weeks after the first VFS visit; the OCI card then follows 25 to 35 days, sometimes stretching to 6 to 8 weeks, after the second submission. VFS appointment availability at either stage can add time on top of both windows, and we'll tell you honestly if your travel plans are tight against the schedule rather than promising a date we can't guarantee.

Mistakes We Prevent#

• Attempting to submit the OCI application before the Surrender Certificate has actually been issued, which the portal rejects outright
• Continuing to use the Indian passport for travel after naturalising, which risks a penalty under the Indian Passport Act, 1967
• Handing the original passport to VFS without keeping a full colour scan of every page first
• Turning up with UK-specification photos instead of the required Indian 2x2 inch format
• Bringing photocopies to an appointment that requires originals
• Leaving a name change between the two passports undeclared, which causes a mismatch the OCI stage will query

Is It Too Late to Surrender an Old Indian Passport?#

No. There's no time limit on surrendering — we regularly handle cases where someone naturalised a decade or more ago and the passport simply sat in a drawer since. A short explanatory letter is sometimes asked for in these cases, and we draft that as part of the service rather than leaving you to write it.

There's also no requirement that surrender and OCI happen close together in time. Some clients naturalised years before deciding they now want an OCI card — perhaps a family visit to India is coming up, or a property matter has made the visa-free travel worth having. Whatever the gap between naturalisation and today, the process itself is unchanged; the only genuinely time-sensitive part of this whole journey is getting the surrender done before the OCI application can go in at all.

What If I Only Discover Mid-Way That I Need Both Stages?#

This happens fairly often: someone books what they think is a standalone OCI application, only to find at VFS that their old Indian passport was never formally surrendered and the appointment can't proceed. What Doesn't Change Between the Two Stages#

It's worth being clear about what carries over and what doesn't. Your proof of UK address, your birth certificate, and your naturalisation certificate are useful at both stages and only need collecting once. What doesn't carry over is the passport itself — the original goes to VFS at the surrender appointment and doesn't come back, so the OCI stage works from the certificate that replaces it, plus a fresh set of OCI-specific documents.
