VFS Manchester Appointment Day 2026: What to Bring to Peter House

There is exactly one moment in the whole Indian passport or OCI process where you have to be physically present, in person, in a specific building — and for the North West that building is Peter House on Oxford Street, in the heart of Manchester. Everything else now happens online through the 2026 portals. This single morning is the choke point: the place where a clean file is lodged in twenty minutes, or where a small upload error you did not catch sends you back across the city to rebook a slot that may be two weeks away.

This is the Manchester-specific appointment-day guide. Not the national overview — the real business of getting to Peter House, getting through the door, giving your biometrics, and walking out with your file accepted at the VFS centre that serves the entire North West. Getting there: Peter House and central Manchester#

The VFS Global Manchester centre is at Peter House, Oxford Street, Manchester M1 5AN, right in the city centre near St Peter's Square. Of the UK's Indian VFS centres, this is one of the most straightforward to reach, because it sits on top of the city's transport spine:

• Manchester Oxford Road rail station is the closest, about a 4–5 minute walk.
• Manchester Piccadilly — where most intercity and regional trains terminate — is roughly 12–15 minutes on foot, or one tram stop.
• St Peter's Square tram stop, a major Metrolink interchange, is about 3–4 minutes away, so trams from across Greater Manchester drop you close by.

Because it is this central, driving and parking are the harder option. City-centre car parks fill and cost; the tram or train is almost always the simpler way to arrive for an appointment here.

Here is the North West-specific point: Peter House is the lodging point for the whole region. Manchester itself has an estimated 45,000-plus Indian-origin residents, but the catchment stretches far wider — applicants travel in from Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Liverpool, because there is no separate VFS for Indian services in those cities. That wide catchment is why a returned file is costly: rebooking means competing for a slot that the whole North West is also chasing, then making the Manchester trip a second time.

Security and what you can take inside#

Treat the door at Peter House like an airport-lite gate. There is a security check on entry, and anything that slows you down there eats into a tightly timed appointment.

• Bring as little as possible. A single folder of documents, your phone, your keys. Large bags and luggage are unwelcome and there is no real cloakroom — if you have travelled in from across the region, do not arrive with a suitcase.

The biometrics step#

For most Indian passport services and adult OCI applications, the appointment exists to capture biometrics in person — your fingerprints and a digital photograph taken at the desk. This is the single technical reason the trip cannot be posted or done by proxy: the High Commission needs your fingerprints captured under supervision.

The biometrics themselves are quick. You are called to a counter, your documents are checked first, then fingerprints are scanned and a photo is taken. Minors do not give fingerprints and do not need to attend, so a parent can lodge a child's file alone. The time on the day goes not into the biometrics but into the document check that precedes them, which is why what you carry, and how clean your file is, decides whether your slot runs smoothly or stalls.

The document checklist to carry to Peter House#

Carry originals plus a clean set of copies. The portal holds your uploads, but the desk will want to see originals at submission. For a North West passport-renewal applicant, this is the order of what actually gets scrutinised.

1. Appointment confirmation — printed, or saved offline on your phone.
2. Current Indian passport — the one being renewed, plus any earlier passports if you have them.
3. Proof of UK address and status — a recent utility bill or bank statement, and evidence of your right to be in the UK (BRP, visa, or ILR), as your case requires.
4. Supporting certificates — marriage certificate if your name changed, or other documents the portal flagged for your case.
5. The photo and the signature to exact spec — the silent killer; see below.

For an OCI rather than a passport, swap in your British passport, proof of former Indian nationality (old Indian passport or surrender certificate), and proof of origin where the link is not on your own passport.

We will name the landmines plainly, because pretending they do not exist is how people walk into them. We will not publish the field-by-field, micro-spec DIY — partly because the specifications change without notice, and partly because that precise work is what a returned file costs you.

• The photo and signature specification. Exact dimensions, a plain background, full face, no shadow, with the signature handled to its own rules.
