The OCI 3-Month Passport Update Rule 2026: Link It or Lose Your Boarding Pass

There is a particular kind of phone call that ruins a holiday before it starts. A family is at the airport, bags checked in their heads, kids already excited about Nani's house — and the airline agent slides the British passport back across the counter and says the OCI doesn't match. The card is valid. The passport is valid. But the OCI record still points at the old passport, and so, as far as the check-in system is concerned, this person cannot be boarded. The flight leaves without them.
This is not a rare edge case. It is the most common avoidable OCI problem we deal with, and it has a deadline: three months. Get a new passport — British or Indian — and you have three months to update your passport particulars against your OCI record online. Inside that window it is free. Outside it, you pay.

The rule, in one paragraph
Your OCI is valid for life. What has to stay current is the passport it is read against. Every time a new passport is issued to you, you file a free online update of your passport particulars at ociservices.gov.in, and you have three months from the date the new passport is issued to do it. That is the whole obligation. You do not need a new card, at any age.
The clock starts on the issue date printed in the new passport — not the day it lands on your doormat, not the day you book flights. Filing late does not invalidate your OCI, but it turns a free job into a paid one, and it leaves you exposed at a check-in desk in the meantime.
OCI new rules 2026: what actually changed
If you last read up on this a year ago, two things have moved, and both moved in your favour.
The age-20 and age-50 re-issue triggers were abolished. The old advice — re-issue the OCI booklet with every new passport up to 20, and again after 50 — is gone. On 30 June 2026, alongside the e-OCI launch, the Press Information Bureau put it plainly: "After 20 years, when a new passport is issued, there will be no need to re-issue the OCI booklet." VFS UK followed on 7 July 2026: "OCI cardholders are no longer required to apply for re-issuance of their OCI card upon attaining 20 years of age." So a routine passport renewal now triggers an online update and nothing else, whether you are 8, 28 or 68.
The OCI went digital. The e-OCI launched on 30 June 2026 and VFS UK transitioned on 7 July, stating that physical OCI cards are no longer issued here. The MHA's own e-OCI FAQ is careful to say the e-OCI "does not replace" the physical card — it is a digital representation of the same record. Existing booklets stay valid. The e-OCI itself is free to generate from the portal dashboard.
The Ministry of Home Affairs FAQ page that most guides cite has not been updated since the e-OCI launch, and still describes the age-20 re-issue as mandatory. It is a government page, so competitors quote it with great confidence — and readers turn up at VFS expecting to pay for a card nobody needs any more. If a 2026 guide tells you to re-issue at 20 or 50, it is reading a page the government forgot to change.
A re-issue is still a real application. It is just driven by what changed — a name change, a lost or damaged card, or a change of nationality — never by a passport renewal on its own.
OCI passport update after 3 months: what it costs
Miss the window and the update is still available. It simply stops being free.
The late fee is US$25 — about £23, plus the VFS service charge. VFS UK words it as "£23 plus VFS Service Charge". That is the entire penalty. There is no per-journey fine, no escalating scale, and no interest running against you. Whether you are four months late or four years late, it is the same one-off amount.

The figures that get confused with this one are worth naming, because they scare people unnecessarily. £247.78 is a fresh OCI registration. £111.78 is an OCI in lieu of a lost or damaged card. £52.78 is an OCI miscellaneous application, such as a name change. None of those is what a routine passport update costs.
What the airline is actually checking
Airlines carry the liability if they fly a passenger India refuses to admit, so at check-in they look for an OCI that corresponds to the passport in your hand. When you renewed, the passport number changed. Until the update goes through, your OCI record points at a booklet you are no longer travelling on, and the agent sees a mismatch.
Some travellers carry the old passport alongside the new one to bridge the gap, and it often works — but it is a fallback, not a plan, and the risk point is your UK departure airport, not Delhi. The clean answer is to file the update the week the passport arrives, while it is free and while nothing is booked.
How to file it
Updating your passport particulars
- Note the issue date in the new passport. That is when your three months start.
- Log in at ociservices.gov.in and choose the miscellaneous services route for updating passport particulars. You will need details from both the old and the new passport, so do not send the old booklet anywhere yet.
- Upload the photograph and signature to spec. This is the step that actually fails — the portal is exacting about face ratio and file quality, expects a recent photograph, and locks the application after five re-upload attempts.
- Complete at VFS if you are prompted to. VFS publishes 7–10 working days for OCI miscellaneous services.
- Save the acknowledgement. It is the document that settles the conversation at a check-in desk while the update is still in progress.
Nothing there is intellectually hard. It is fiddly, unforgiving of small mistakes, and easy to get subtly wrong in a way you only discover at an airport.

The other 2026 change: the e-Arrival Card
There is a second requirement that catches OCI holders out, because for years OCI meant "no paperwork at the border".
The e-Arrival Card is mandatory, and it applies to OCI cardholders as well as foreign nationals. You file it within 72 hours before you arrive, at indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival or through the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. Do not count on a paper card being handed out on the aircraft. (The paper form's abolition is widely dated to 1 April 2026, but no government notification using that date could be located; the documented position is a mandatory rollout from 1 October 2025 with a stated six-month transition.)
It is free, and the government has stated explicitly that it authorises no agent to charge for it. If someone quotes you a fee to file your e-Arrival Card, that is the whole of what you need to know about them.

When to do it yourself
For an adult with a clean passport scan and a photograph that meets the spec, this is genuinely a do-it-yourself job. It is free inside the window, it is entirely online, and it does not warrant an agent fee on its own merits.
Where paying for help earns its place is when the update is riding on something: a trip already booked, an upload that has been bounced twice and is eating into your five attempts, a family doing four people at once, or a passport particulars change tangled up with a name change that pushes you into a chargeable miscellaneous application. Is the e-OCI a replacement for my OCI card?
Not according to the MHA, whose e-OCI FAQ says the e-OCI "does not replace" the physical card and describes it as a digital representation of the same record. In practice VFS UK stopped issuing physical cards on 7 July 2026, so a new UK application produces the digital document. Existing booklets remain valid.
